INTRODUCTION *********************************************************

Welcome to Cisco Fast Step for Cisco 700 Series Routers.

Cisco Fast Step software, the Quick-Reference Guide (with the
match-the-colors cabling system), and the cables in the "Open Me First"
accessory kit, allow you to quickly connect to the Internet or your corporate
network.

Cisco Fast Step software consist of two parts:

1. A Setup utility that uses a GUI to establish your connection from
the router to the Internet or corporate network. The Setup utility
leads you through a step-by-step configuration process for setting up your router,
testing each entry as the configuration is built.

2. A Monitor utility that allows you to check line usage and warns you
if a problem occurs. The Monitor utility can be launched by using
   Start>Programs>Cisco Fast Step>Monitor for 700 Series. (Monitor
   runs independently of Setup.)

Cisco Fast Step runs on almost any computer running the Microsoft
Windows 95, 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation operating systems
(see the "System Requirements" section for details).

UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS ***********************************************

NOTE: This section only applies if you downloaded Cisco Fast Step from
Cisco Connection Online (CCO) Web site.

The CCO ZIP file contains the latest Cisco Fast Step files. You can
launch the InstallShield wizard to install Cisco Fast Step.

To expand the ZIP file on the hard disk:

Use WINZIP or your favorite (un)ZIP utility to expand the utility
files and subdirectories to a temporary directory. Be sure to
allow the utility to create the same subdirectories as are in the
zip file.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS *************************************************

Cisco Fast Step can be installed from a CD-ROM, hard disk drive, or
floppy disk drive.

To install Cisco Fast Step from a CD:

When you put the Cisco Fast Step CD into your CD-ROM drive, Cisco Fast
Step InstallShield wizard launches automatically. Use the wizard to
install Cisco Fast Step onto your hard disk. Once Cisco Fast Step is
installed, the Setup utility is automatically launched.

Place the Cisco Fast Step CD in the drive of a Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 PC.
It should automatically run the InstallShield wizard after 10-15 seconds.

To install Cisco Fast Step from a hard disk:

Run SETUP.EXE in the Disk1 directory using Control Panel>Add/Remove
Programs, My Computer or the Run... command on the Start menu.

To install Cisco Fast Step from a floppy disk:

Place Disk 1 in a drive in a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 PC and
run SETUP.EXE on Disk1 using Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs,
My Computer or the Run... command on the Start menu.

CREATE INSTALL DISK **************************************************

This section describes the procedure for making copies of the
installation CD or a floppy disk set.

Note that the distribution ZIP file does not contain the Cisco 700
Series Installation Guide or the Cisco 700 Series Command Reference
found in the Books subdirectory on the CD. However, the documents
can be copied directly to floppy disks and distributed. (The
document files can be run in their current form.)

After unpacking the zip file onto the hard disk drive, the
installation components are placed in subdirectories titled
diskn (where n = a number). From these files, you can make an
installation floppy disk set or CD for distribution.

To create a set of floppy disks for distribution:

Copy the contents of each subdirectory onto floppy disks (one
subdirectory to each disk). For example, copy the disk1
subdirectory to the first floppy disk. (The current version of
Cisco Fast Step requires three disks.)

To create a CD for distribution:

1. Copy the contents of the source root directory in the distribution
zip file to the root directory of a blank CD so that all the files,
including autorun.inf, is in the root directory.

2. Copy the subdirectories named Language1 through LanguageN and their
contents to the target CD, using the same directory structure.

CAVEATS **************************************************************

1. Be sure to exit Cisco Fast Step Setup and Cisco Fast Step Monitor
before uninstalling an existing version or installing a new
   version of the software.

2. We advise you to run Monitor only from one machine
   on the network.

3. Changing the colors or screen fonts while
Setup is running might cause unpredictable results.

4. If Monitor loses its connection to the router and
the user reconnects Monitor, the Call Detail
times for the same data channel might overlap.

5. When changing the Cost Control Settings dialog of Monitor
to permit multiple data channels, be sure that there are no
data channels with active connections. If you are removing
this restriction and a data channel is active, the second data
channel cannot be connected until the first data channel is
   disconnected.

6. Installing Cisco Fast Step 1.3 into the same subdirectory as
Cisco Fast Step 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2, overwrites the setup.cfg file. Save
a copy of setup.cfg in another directory for reference before
uninstalling Cisco Fast Step 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2, or before installing
Cisco Fast Step 1.3 into the same subdirectory.

UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS 1.0, 1.1 OR 1.2 ******************************

If you are reconfiguring an existing Cisco 700 Series router, and
Cisco Fast Step was reinstalled after this router was configured (or
the router was configured by some means other than Cisco Fast Step),
Cisco Fast Step Setup will fail to discover the existing router using
the Ethernet connection. You have two choices:

1. Connect your PC to the router with the config cable and run Cisco
Fast Step Setup. After the router is configured, you can
disconnect the config cable. Cisco Fast Step Monitor, and
subsequent runs of Cisco Fast Step Setup, will be able to connect
to the router using the Ethernet connection.

2. Telnet to the router, and type the command "SET DEFAULT".

*** WARNING: This erases the router's current configuration! ***

Cisco Fast Step Setup is now able to discover and connect to
the router using the Ethernet connection.

MAKING A CONFIGURATION FILE ******************************************

You can use a configuration file for Cisco Fast Step to automate the
configuration process for your user. This file can be generated
either by running Cisco Fast Step and entering the desired parameters
or by using any ASCII editor such as Notepad to create a configuration
file.

The default extension for a Cisco Fast Step configuration file
is .CFG. When you use Cisco Fast Step Setup to configure a router and
indicate that you have a configuration file, the utility discovers
all of the configuration files with a .CFG extension.

The format of the configuration file is similar to the INI files
used in Windows 3.1. The configuration file consists of several
sections and within each of these sections is a collection of
parameters.

The section names have [] surrounding the title, for example
[ImLocalNetworkIF]. The parameters are all of the form:

	parameter name=parameter value

For example,

	LANIPAddress=10.0.0.1

A full explanation of the sections names and parameters can be found
in the Design Implementation Guide, which was placed in the installation
directory.

ADDING A NEW INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER *******************************

The list of Internet service providers is produced by discovering the names of the
configuration files in the "ISP Configurations" directory under the
installation directory. When you press the Add New... button, Cisco Fast
Step software copies a working configuration file to that directory and
displays it in the list.

Follow the instructions in the Design Implementation Guide, located in the installation directory, to create new configuration files.
