INTRODUCTION *************************************************

Welcome to Cisco Fast Step for Cisco 800 series routers.

You can use Cisco Fast Step software, the Quick-Start Guide,
and the cables in the "Open Me First" accessory kit, to quickly
connect to the Internet or your corporate network.

Cisco Fast Step software consists of two utilities. The Setup
utility uses a GUI to lead you through the configuration
process step-by-step. It tests each entry as the configuration
is built and establishes your connection from the router to the
Internet or corporate network.

The Monitor utility is used to check line usage and warns you
if a problem occurs. It is launched from the Start menu by using
Start>Programs>Cisco Fast Step>Monitor (assuming you installed
the software using the defaults).

NEW FEATURES FOR VERSION 2.5a ************************************

Cost control features have been added. These features allow you to
restrict the data calls to one channel and restrict the time of day data
calls can be made. The features are present in both the Setup and
Monitor applications. Parameters entered in Setup become the default
settings in Monitor.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS **************************************************

UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS ***********************************************

NOTE: This section only applies if you downloaded Cisco Fast Step from
Cisco Connection Online (CCO).

The CCO Zip file contains the latest Cisco Fast Step files. Launch the
InstallShield wizard to install Cisco Fast Step on your PC.

To expand the zip file:

Use WinZip or your favorite (un)zip utility to expand the files and
subdirectories. Make sure the utility creates the same subdirectory
structure on your hard drive as the structure that is in the zip file.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ********************************************

Cisco Fast Step can be installed from a CD-ROM or from your hard disk drive.

To install Cisco Fast Step from a CD-ROM:

Place the CD in your PC. InstallShield should automatically start after
10-15 seconds. If it fails to start, run SETUP.EXE in the root directory
of the CD by using the Run... command on the Start menu.

To install Cisco Fast Step from a hard disk:

Run SETUP.EXE by using the Run... command on the Start menu, located in
the directory where the software was copied.

CAVEATS ********************************************************

* Cisco Fast Step configures Cisco 827 routers using the template (TPL)
files only; It does not support the configuration of the router using
the wizard or configuration (CFG) files.

* We advise you to run Cisco Fast Step Monitor from only one machine
on the network.

* You can use the Internet Servers dialog to choose a combined Web and
Mail server or individual Web and Mail servers. Selecting both the
combined Web and Mail server and the individual Web (or Mail) server
options implies that you will publish two Web servers (or two Mail servers).
This works only if your ISP has assigned individual IP addresses for
each of these servers.

* The ISDN switch types available depend on the country selected during
the installation of Cisco Fast Step.

* If configuring the IOS firewall, Setup issues a command for IP fragment
inspection. This command might not be supported by older IOS firewall images.

* In North America, the ISDN Auto Detection feature might not always discover
the ISDN switch type and SPIDs. See the IOS release notes for Cisco 800 series
routers for further details.

UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, or 2.4a *********

If you are reconfiguring a Cisco 800 Series router and Cisco Fast Step was
installed after this router was configured (or the router was configured by
some means other than Cisco Fast Step), Setup fails to discover the router
using the Ethernet connection. You have two choices:

1. Connect your PC to the router with the console cable and run Setup.
After the router is configured, disconnect the config cable. Monitor and
subsequent runs of Setup can connect to the router by using the
Ethernet connection.

2. Telnet to the router or connect to it by using a communications
application (for example HyperTerminal) and complete one of the following
procedures.

Caution the following procedures erase the router's current configuration.

If the router prompt is in nonprivileged mode (the prompt has ">" appended)
do the following:

a) Enter the command "enable". The router prompts for the enable password.

b) Enter the enable password.

c) Enter the command "config terminal".

d) Enter the command "erase start". The router prompts for confirmation.

e) Enter "yes". The router NVRAM is erased.

f) Enter the command "Reload". The router prompts for confirmation.

g) Enter "yes". The router is set to the factory default configuration.

If the router prompt is in privileged mode (it has a pound symbol (#) appended),
do the following:

a) Enter the command "config terminal".

b) Enter the command "Write erase". The router prompts for confirmation.

c) Enter "yes". The router NVRAM is erased.

d) Enter the command "Reload". The router prompts for confirmation.

e) Enter "yes". The router is set to the factory default configuration.

Cisco Fast Step Setup can now discover and connect to the router by using
the Ethernet connection.
